The Amazings: Craft Classes with Elders

There is something you don't know about me. Okay, maybe a lot of somethings. Like the fact that I cannot free myself from the clutches of fast-food consumption. Or that I really like Snapple's Mango Madness juice. But today, I am going to talk about the other thing you don't know. That I love senior adults. I started working with that population during my counseling internship in grad school. I was a therapist in a geriatric psych hospital. I became passionate about working with and honoring seniors (particularly because our Western society does such a terrible job of valuing senior adults - but that's a story of another day). As they say, the rest is history. My current day job is running a program that matches volunteers with isolated seniors or caregivers who need a break.
So, when The Amazings approached me to see if I would like to review their classes, I said 'HECK YES!" The Amazings records elders teaching their craft(s) so they can pass their knowledge down. Here is what The Amazings says about their mission:
Society has always learned from its elders. but somewhere along the way we have lost that connection between generations — which means losing rich, valuable, and rare skills. We're on a mission to fix this and we need your help.
What was that? Senior adults and crafting? Two of my favorite things?! Okay, count me in. I took the Make Your Own Natural Beauty Products class and LOVED it. I mean, really, I ate it up. I currently have an online shopping cart full of essential oils, carrier oils and bottles. I am so ready to make some of my own beauty products! And not just a salt scrub, which is somewhat common knowledge, but a toner, oil-based cleanser and face mask (and more!).
The thing I found most impressive about the videos - okay, two things. 1. The casual feeling of the video. It doesn't feel didactic at all and it's sort of like you are crafting with a friend. 2. The awesome amount of knowledge that the teacher, Judith, shares with such ease. She talks about making the products work for your skin type and the benefits of certain oils. It is so informative (and she gives a great pdf chart that is very handy).
I was pretty excited about The Amazings based on the concept alone but now I am thrilled with the quality of the class I took. I highly recommend it! If beauty products aren't your thing, check out their other classes.

I was not paid to write this post but The Amazings did provide the class as a courtesy. All opinions are 100% my own.

This is so amazing! I love this, thanks for sharing...those are two of my favorite things too! In fact, it sounds like we have the same job...kind of! I run an elder friends program in WA state and work as an admin for an elder care day center and in home care non-profit. ;) I love seeing things like this because our generation doesn't usually embrace the elders like they should and this makes me happy!

Thanks for the comment, Sarah! Isn't this concept great? We should chat about our day jobs! And crafting, of course. :)

i thought i sort of knew what you did but had no idea that you worked w/ seniors, that is so cool Katie! my hubs is from latin america so a common topic he rants on is our lack of concern for seniors and how isolated they become here, which was a total culture shock for him of course. anyway, those classes look really cool!
